Educational Qualifications
Graduated with Honours in History from Government College, Lahore in 1945. His name was inscribed in the Academic Roll of Honour of the College. After graduating he joined the Law College at Lahore for a three years LL.B. degree Course.
He was in the third year of this Course when the Partition of India took place in August, 1947 and he had to migrate to India. He joined the newly started Law College at Simla to complete the course for LL.B. degree which he did with a First Class First from the East Punjab University in 1948.
On the basis of All India Competitive Examination, he was appointed to the Indian Police Service in 1951 and allocated to the Punjab Cadre. He served in various districts and assignments in the State before rising to be the head of the Punjab CID in 1971. Finally he became the Chief of the Punjab Police. He was awarded the highest Police distinctions during his career.
In 1977 his services were requisitioned by the Government of India and he was appointed as Joint Director, Central Bureau of Investigation. He took over as its Head as Director CBI in 1980. This post he held for over five years before retiring in 1985. His was one of the longest tenures as Head of CBI.  During his tenure in CBI, he frequently visited Europe,U.K. and various other countries in connection with Interpol Conferences, meetings and important investigations.
After his retirement, he shifted to Chandigarh where he is now residing. He has been a Member of the Advisory Council of the Governor -- Administrator, Chandigarh for a tenure of two years.
